Ref: KTS/anantha /050/AE/99
Date : 29th October 99. Dr. M. Ananthakrishnan
Chairman, Sub-Committee,
State Level Task Force on IT
Govt. Of Tamilnadu
Tamilnadu State Council for Higher Education
Lady Wellingotn College Campus,
Kamaraj Salai, Chennai - 600 005. Dear Dr. Ananthakrishnan,
Sub: Clarification
regarding Regarding Remington Keyboard Layout as per G.O.MS.NO.17
dt 13.6.99. Testing of Tamil Sotware and Certification and
nomination of Kanithamizh Sangam as Certifying Agency as per
G.O (MS) No: 28dt 9.8.99.
- As per the G.O (MS) 28, application
forms as aproved by the Task Force on IT is being issued
to the TamilSoftware Developers and the completed aplications
are being received.
- As per the G.O. (MS) No 17
dated 13.06.99, the present layout and sequencing of mechanical
typewriter (Remington) Keyboard to be maintained excepting
the replacement of the sign "
"
with the sign "ý".
The actual Typewriter Keyboard is not given in the Anneexure
to the G.O.17. Many developers wanted to know exactly what
is to be followed as the Remington layout.
- The Tamil Software Certifying
Agency in their first meeting held on 25.10.99, discussed
this subject in detail and found that it is necessary to
issue the clarification to all the developers along with
the Application form for software certification.
- The standard Remington Typewriter
Keyboard Layout is shown in Annexure I-A and the kekyboard
sequence for Remington Layout is given in Annexure II-A.
These are mandatory for certification of Typewriter Layout.
- The conventional Remington Typewriter
lacks many of the symbols like ðŸÁ
(Ð), õó¾ (Ñ), ⇠(), Ï𣌠(–), «ñŸð® (—), «îF (s), ñ£î‹
(t), õ¼ì‹ (u) and the computer
keyboard symbols which are already provided in the TamilNet
Encoding standards. However many developers have incorporated
these symbols in some way or other in the past 10 years
and thousands of users (mainly in the Govt.Sector and Publishing
Segment) are already using these symbols.
- The certifying Committee felt
that without altering the standard Remingtom Keyboard, Layout,
an Enhanced Typewriter Keyboard Layout wherin all these
missing symbols could be incorporared though an escape sequence
like 'A' (which is vaccant now). The Enhanced Typewriter
layout is given in Annexure I-B and the Keyboard sequence
for the same is given in Annexure II-B. However implementation
of these additional features need not be made mandatory
for certification. This is only aguidance for the developers
purely for the sake of uniformity.
- We seek your guidance and aproval
for implementing the above clarifications.
Thanking You,
Yours
faithfully,
for Kanithamizh Sangm
A. ELANGOVAN

Keyboard Sequences for Enhanced Typewriter
Keyboard Layout
-
1. The conventional layout
lacks many of thesymbols available in the computer keyboard.
Also the Tamil symbols, now available with the Tamil99keyboard
are also not available. In order to make these symbols
also available for the conventional typist, in an easy
way, it is proposed in the Enhanced Typewriter Keyboard
Layout to make the A(upper case) as the escape key. This
key is vacant in the typewriter keyboard. Once this key
A is pressed, all the symbols in the computer keyboard
become available in the same positions as shown on a computer
keyboard. The layout of all these keys are shown in Annexure
IB.
- Note that this escape key is only for the
symbols, and not for the numerals and the English letters.
If any key other than those mentioned here is pressed key
only should be activated.
- The three numeral positions 2,3 and 4 are
shown in this layout. They correspond to the symbols half
(1/2), three quarters (3/4) and quarter (1/4). This is easy
to remember. These symbols are not available in the TAM
and TAB coding schemes. The vendoer may choose to place
them in some of the vacant slots. For this, the positions
141 (1/4), 157(1/2), and 158(3/4) are recommended.
- The Tamil symbols have also been provided,
in the same places as in the Tamil 99 layout. Note that
these symbols are available in the TAM code.
- The copyright symbol can be obtained by typing
c after the escape letter A.The bullet sign can be got by
typing the full stop after the escape sequence A. Note that
among the symbols, only the full stop will not be available
as such, after the escape symbol.
- The non breaking space (160)..... is available
in the upper case N position.
